The First Thirty is our Instagram Live Writers’ Series, where I get to sit and chat with authors about writing their books. I love talking about writing, hearing how writers face and overcome the obstacles of writing something great with only the spark of an idea: something readers will not want to put down, a book people will want to talk about. The First Thirty is where we talk about writing, and how authors shape those first pages to be a welcome to the reader; to include the hook that makes a reader want to keep reading, and to give us the characters we either want to love or really hate. Or maybe something else entirely.

Please, always consider purchasing your books directly from small presses or at your local independent book store. Check out our list of independent book shops in Toronto. Most deliver and all are happy to do over the phone shopping.

  1. Hi there – I’m a local writer, and my first historical novel was published by Bookouture (the digital division of Hachette) 2 weeks ago. I also run a local creative writing school. I thought I would reach out to ask if you are interested in having your book club read my book. I would also be happy to offer a reading or a writing workshop for your members. I live at Jane/Annette.

Here is the link to reviews of my book on Amazon:

Finally, I’m not sure if you ever look for venues to host in-person events, but my arts studio is available in Bloor West Village and for occasional use I would be happy to offer it free of charge.

    Have a great week,

    Julie Hartley
