Prepare for Launch!!!

October is the best month (it just is) but mainly because the air is filled with the sights, sounds and smells of new books!

Toronto is bustling with bookish events! The Toronto Book Awards will be announced on October 10. Another Story Book Shop‘s schedule is jammed with literary events. And if you want to find a reading series near you, anywhere in Canada, there is one!

We are excited (nervous, anxious, thrilled, hopeful) to return to in person events, but also very happy to continue our online events with authors from across Turtle Island.

If you want to purchase any of the titles coming to Junction Reads, you can shop online at TYPE Books.

On October 15 (6:00pm ET), we launch our virtual events with Kathryn Mockler and her latest collection of stories, ANECDOTES from Book*hug Press. As a writer, this collection was an inspirational read, for its honesty, depth and fearless writing. As a reader, it had me moving back and forth between the one-liner stories, the realist and the fantastic, finding connections and feeling a bit desperate (as a species, we need to change shit). Register Here. PWYC. Proceeds to the Raven Trust. Paid tickets will be entered in our raffle on October 29 for a chance to win a book bundle sponsored by the publishers.

“I’ve decided that the less I know, the happier, I’ll be. And if I’m happier, then I won’t have to worry about what the politicians are really doing or how we are slowly killing ourselves in a murder-suicide of epic proportions.” (This Isn’t a Conversation)

October 29 (6:00pm ET), we launch our first in-person event in three years. TYPE Books graciously welcomes us into their accessible space to host our in-person events this season. 3 authors join us for readings, Q and A, and book signing.

Kathryn Kuitenbrouwer brings her latest novel, WAIT SOFTLY, BROTHER from Wolsak & Wynn. It has been longlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize. and we are excited to see what comes next for this incredible novel. Blending fact, fiction, truth, memories, Kathryn tells a story that is immediately exciting and slowly unravels in an exploration of family, love, selfhood and determined happiness.

“You think about leaving your marriage, you fantasize about it, try it on in your mind, but then, when you actually go ahead and do it, it’s not at all like you thought. You can’t really fathom the injury it causes…”

Paola Ferrante will read from her debut collection of stories, HER BODY AMONG ANIMALS from Book*hug Press. I am excited to dive into this collection that promises “horror, fairy tales, pop culture, and sci-fi, women challenge the boundaries placed on their bodies while living in a world “among animals,” where violence is intertwined with bizarre ecological disruptions.”

“In their second year of marriage, she became a spider. Her reasons for the metamorphosis varied, depending on who asked. She told her employer she needed more artistic growth and development; she told her mother she was compensating for gymnastic failures as a child. She told Michael she felt they had been growing apart, and that she could now buying them together again. Literally.” (Cobwebs)

BH Panhuyzen reads from his fourth work of fiction, A TIDY ARMAGEDDON from ECW Press. Described as a “provocative eco-novel featuring an apocalypse like no other” where civilization has been dismantled by an unknown hand and reassembled into a vast maze of blocks” this novel will give us something to talk about.

“For a moment she let herself pretend that everything was all right, that the world was fine, and birds flew south, and her daughter Lana was safe with her dad, and there’d be some thing to watch on TV tonight.” (Sergeant Elisabeth Sharpcot)

As a reading series that strives to be equitable, diverse and inclusive, we are happy to say that TYPE books is an accessible space. We will continue to monitor COVID numbers, but strongly encourage (and may mandate) mask wearing at our events. We will have N95s available at the door. We believe COVID poses a real and serious risk to longterm health, especially to health vulnerable people. If you feel unwell, please stay home and contact us for a full refund.
